Queensland’s Tourism Industry to Think Globally and Increase Offerings
Grant Bowie, CEO of MGM China Holdings Ltd and former Jupiters Casino boss, said that Queensland’s tourism industry needs to think globally and increase product offerings to win tourists from Asia.
Bowie spoke at the Destination Q forum on the Gold Coast in August, saying that his company will compete with businesses in Australia, particularly Queensland. He believed that competition, not monopoly, will enable Queensland to work harder and provide higher-quality offerings to their customers.
Bowie also mentioned that Hainan, a Chinese island, could become a threat to Queensland as a major tourist destination. Therefore, Queensland’s tourism industry should take a more innovative and targeted marketing approach, as well as improve existing products.
Campbell Newman, Queensland’s Premier, said that luxury and resorts that offered multiple experiences were especially loved by Chinese tourists. He added that several companies on the Gold Coast were asking for casino licences, particularly those working on the Broadwater Marine Project. If granted, it would be able to pay for a cruise ship terminal, which in turn will help Queensland become the number one tourist destination in Australia.
